On 7 January, 1948 a P-51 Mustang plummeted from the sky after chasing what the tower identified (or unidentified) as a UFO. Coming just 6 months after the "UFO Crash" at Roswell New Mexico, the radar sighting deserved a second look, and so a flight of 4 P-51 Mustangs that were returning for Marietta, Georgia was vectored tothe sighting. 1 Plane had to turn back to Godman Field due to being low on gas. The three remainingP-51's continued on their pursuit. The chase took them to a height of 25,000 ft, despite the factthat 2 of the remaining Mustangs, including the crashed one, were not equipped for such an altitude.2 more Mustangs turned back, leaving only Thomas Mantell to chase the object. His last transmission was"I see the object. I am going to pursue it a bit farther." At 33,000 it is assumed that Thomas Mantell diedfrom anoxia, lack of oxygen. The plane continued to climb until it eventually plummeted out of the sky and crashed in a field in Franklin, Kentucky.
